About Bankend Quarry

Bankend Quarry is a sand and gravel quarry which lies approximately 3.9km south of Drumclog in South Lanarkshire. It plays a vital part in the supply of construction materials for the Glasgow and South Lanarkshire area, providing coarse sand and gravel for use in concrete, fine sand for use in mortar and asphalt sand for use in road surfacing and maintenance.

While sand and gravel are extracted at the quarry, there is no fixed quarry plant or settling ponds at the site. Instead, the mineral is transported 3.5km by electric conveyor to Snabe Quarry for processing and sale. Snabe Quarry has direct access onto the A71, reducing the traffic on local roads.

We are looking to extend the working life of Bankend and Snabe, which will contribute to the local economy, including maintaining local jobs and supporting work for local businesses, hauliers, and supply chain partners.

The remaining reserves at Bankend Quarry are nearing exhaustion, meaning we need to find a replacement site to continue the supply of building materials to the local area.

We are therefore proposing to move the extraction site into an adjacent area, named Laigh Plewland. The new area covers approximately 22 hectares of moundy land previously used for grazing and more recently for 4x4 off road driving and motorbiking.

If approved, Laigh Plewland could provide a further 10 to 12 years of sand and gravel supply.
